Late 1950s - Councils in Cornwall start employing professional lifeguards

In the late 1950s councils in Cornwall started employing professional lifeguards on the beaches to try to get over the huge number of holidaymakers drowning every year.

This drew in Australians and Americans, and when they mixed with our own lifesavers a new surf culture was born.
