1961 - Viv Ganz started surfing in Wales
Viv Ganz started bellyboarding at Langland bay until one evening in 1960 he saw a newsreel movie of stand up surfing in Biarritz. Inspired by this and after a few failed attempts, he got a local carpenter to build a 12 foot hollow board following the plans of the Tom Blake designed boards. He surfed this in the summer of 1961 and started the sport of surfing in Wales which soon caught on and the famous Langland Crew were formed.
